Ondine Biomedical presented the findings of the first development phase of a food-safe photodisinfection technology for Canada’s meat packing industry.

The project phase, which was funded in part by the Government of Canada under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s AgriScience Program, involved identifying and screening potential food-safe photosensitizers for efficacy against bacterial biofilms common in food processing. These light-sensitive substances could be used in combination with specific wavelengths of light to disinfect food and surfaces in the food industry.

Webinar Panelists:

  • Dr. Richard Rusk (DVM, MD, CCFP, MPH, DipZBPV, FRSPH), Prevention Medicine Specialist and former Manitoba Medical Officer of Health
  • Dr. Nicolas Loebel, Ondine Biomedical President and Chief Technology Officer
  • Dr. Joe Ross, Senior Scientist at Chinook Contract Research

Potential Uses in the Food Industry

Photodisinfection has the potential to improve food safety and quality at multiple levels of the food industry. It could be used to sanitize food and surfaces in manufacturing facilities, grocery stores, and homes, extending shelf life and reducing waste without the need for harsh chemicals or antimicrobials.
